June 2008: A video backgrounder on energy trading

Stephen Andrews gave a presentation at a workshop for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in Mumbai. The presentation covers the design of a trading system to encourage renewable energy for Maharashtra which is India's third largest state by area - about the size of Italy, and at 90 million the second largest in terms of population.

The evidence is drawn from a European perspective but is applicable to all liberalising energy markets that are attempting to encourage, accommodate and benefit from green energy. A critical feature of these markets will additionally be the ability to trade, operate and control large numbers of disaggregated sources of generation and demand through 'smart grids', where there will be an expectation of high security and quality of supply.

Modern ICT equipment and networks mean that this concept is now much more likely to be effective, as the intelligence, communication and processing ability can be relatively easily and cheaply embedded in generators, devices and the network. This will bring closer the concept of a virtual energy 'internet', .meaning less reliance on centralised decisions or control, as were necessary in the past.
