May 2009: IS and GHGs

David Flint has written a report on Reducing IS's Carbon Footprint. In this abstract, David gives us a taste of what's in the report.

All organizations in the developed world will shortly face legal requirements to reduce their energy use and thus their Carbon footprints (that is, their emissions of greenhouse gases). IS departments will have to play a full part in meeting these requirements.

IS should therefore appoint a green IT champion to take the lead. IS should measure the energy use in its data centres and take steps to reduce it. These steps will usually include adopting a more efficient systems architecture based on thin clients, reducing data duplication and improving the efficiency of the data centre cooling systems.

Outside the data centres IS should, in the short-term, encourage more responsible use of PCs whilst, for the long-term, implementing centralized power management. IS should also review all major business decision models and applications to ensure that they take full account of the need to reduce carbon emissions.
